YouTube is currently experimenting with a new feature for its minute-long vertical video format, Shorts. This feature, known as Dream Screen, utilizes artificial intelligence to add custom green screen images to the videos. The goal of this feature is to provide users with the ability to incorporate creative backgrounds into their videos, allowing them to stand out or align with the theme of their content.
When users gain access to the Dream Screen feature, they can provide a text prompt describing the background they want in their video. For example, they could request a “fancy hotel pool on a tropical island,” and the AI will quickly generate the image. This generated background can then be added to the video to enhance its visual appeal.
Despite the announcement of this feature, YouTube has left several key details ambiguous. It is unclear whether the green screen background needs to be added during recording or if it can be applied to pre-recorded videos. Additionally, it is unknown if users will need a physical green screen setup for the effect to work, or if the background can be digitally inserted like in Google Meet.
As an experimental feature, Dream Screen is currently limited to a select group of Shorts creators. However, YouTube has stated that more creators will have access to this tool later in 2023. In contrast, the Playables feature, which provides access to over 75 free-to-play games, has been made available to all users after previously being exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
YouTube’s new Dream Screen feature represents an exciting development for Shorts creators looking to enhance their videos with custom backgrounds. While the specifics of the feature are still somewhat unclear, it is evident that YouTube is focused on providing innovative tools to its users to foster creativity and engagement within the platform.
