The Wild Ride of A24’s Y2K: Behind the Scenes

Rachel Zegler and the rest of the cast of A24’s Y2K had a memorable experience filming a scene involving a group of high school students tumbling down a hill inside an overflowing porta potty. Zegler shared that the substance used for the scene, a mixture of hot chocolate and glycerin, smelled amazing but was challenging to work with. The porta potty was set on its side, creating a bouncing effect during the scene. Zegler recalled her co-star Jaeden Martell covering her ear during filming to prevent water from getting in, adding a layer of authenticity to the final cut.

Writer and director Kyle Mooney shared his inspiration for Y2K, citing a YouTube video he came across where a friend watched a VHS tape survival guide for the Y2K phenomenon. The film delves into the 1990s era, incorporating references to Tipper Gore and dial-up Internet. Mooney revealed that the idea for the film came to him on New Year’s Day in 2019 after celebrating with friends and texting his co-writer Evan Winter about a concept involving two kids attending a party on December 31, 1999, which ultimately goes awry.

In addition to its talented cast, Y2K boasts a team of producers including Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Alison Goodwin, Chris Storer, Cooper Wehde, and Evan Winer. The film also stars Julian Dennison, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Mason Gooding, and The Kid Laroi, rounding out a dynamic ensemble that brings Mooney’s vision to life on screen.

Mooney expressed his excitement about reimagining the Y2K hysteria, turning a potentially catastrophic event into a comedic disaster. The film’s unique blend of humor and nostalgia draws viewers into a chaotic journey through the turn of the century, capturing the essence of a bygone era while offering a fresh perspective on the Y2K phenomenon. Through innovative storytelling and engaging performances, Y2K promises to entertain audiences and leave them with a renewed appreciation for the unpredictability of the past.

A24’s Y2K offers a thrilling and comedic take on a pivotal moment in history, blending nostalgia with humor to create a unique cinematic experience. With a talented cast and creative team at the helm, the film promises to delight audiences and spark conversations about the enduring impact of the Y2K phenomenon.
