As Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans to reveal a new robotaxi product in August, it has come to light that Tesla has not applied for the necessary permits from two California agencies that regulate robotaxis. The lack of permits raises questions about the timeline for getting a robotaxi service up and running in the state.
California requires aspiring robotaxi services to obtain at least two permits: one from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for deploying autonomous equipment on the road, and another from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to operate as a business. Tesla currently only holds the lowest-level permit from the DMV, allowing them to test autonomous vehicles with human drivers present.
Tesla has taken a different approach to self-driving technology compared to other companies such as Waymo and Cruise. Tesla has deployed driver assistance systems nationwide, while others have focused on mastering small geographic areas. Additionally, Tesla has relied less on expensive hardware sensors like LiDAR.
Each state handles robotaxi regulations differently, and it is possible that Tesla could seek to launch a service without California, although this would mean missing out on a major market. With Musk hinting at a Robotaxi unveil in August, speculation is rife about what the announcement could entail – whether it’s a new vehicle, a service, or something else entirely.
Nationwide Operations
Tesla may require authorization from various states or localities to operate a nationwide robotaxi fleet. Companies like Waymo and Cruise have permits from multiple states to operate as transportation network companies, but Tesla’s plans for nationwide operations remain unclear.
