As the Cincinnati Bengals gear up for their season opener, the availability of wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase remains uncertain. Coach Zac Taylor has indicated that Chase is day-to-day as he awaits the status of a contract extension. With less than a week before the first game of the season, the situation surrounding Chase’s participation is fluid, leaving the team to prepare for potential contingencies.
During the team’s last practice before the game week officially begins, Chase’s involvement was closely monitored. While he did participate in Monday’s portion of practice open to the media, his level of activity has been limited in recent days. Despite this, Taylor expressed confidence in Chase’s physical condition, stating that he feels good about the shape that the three-time Pro Bowler is in.
In addition to the uncertainty surrounding Chase, Coach Taylor also announced that cornerback Dax Hill and right tackle Trent Brown will start against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Hill, who previously held the starting free safety position, has earned the starting cornerback spot over DJ Turner. On the offensive line, Brown will be taking the starting position over rookie Amarius Mims, who is recovering from a preseason injury. Taylor cited Mims’ lack of practice time as a hindrance to starting him but expressed confidence in Brown’s ability to set the edge.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties facing the team, Coach Taylor remains optimistic about the upcoming season. He praised Brown for his professionalism and dedication throughout training camp, highlighting his experience and reliability as a valuable asset to the team. While there are undoubtedly hurdles to overcome, Taylor’s vote of confidence in his players and his adaptability as a coach will be crucial as the Bengals navigate the unpredictable waters of the NFL season.
