The fusion process releases a tremendous amount of heat energy while being inherently safe, as it cannot initiate a runaway reaction. However, this milestone was reached by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States, using a different laser-based approach. The ITER project aims to achieve continuous fusion reactions for over 300 seconds by implementing superconductor electromagnets. If all goes according to plan, a prototype fusion power plant could become a reality by 2050.

Unlike nuclear fission, which is utilized in atomic power plants, fusion technology cannot be weaponized.
