The cat days of spring have arrived with Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie claiming the No. 1 spot on both domestic and international box office charts. The film, which started its overseas release last month, raked in an impressive $27.1 million in 60 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $152.2 million. Notably, overseas markets only saw a slight 3% decline from the previous weekend, with the international box office reaching $100.7 million. In key markets like China, the film surpassed the lifetime earnings of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration in just two days.
On the other hand, Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a lackluster international weekend, pulling in $21 million across 77 markets. Despite a 38% drop from previous numbers, the film’s global total stands at $114.4 million. The movie faced challenges in some regions but managed to hold its ground in markets like Germany, Belgium, and France. With upcoming releases in China, the franchise hopes to pick up speed and attract a wider audience.
Meanwhile, 20th Century/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes saw a mere 28% decline from the previous weekend, adding $15.2 million in 52 markets. The international total now stands at $197.1 million, making it the most successful installment of the franchise in several countries. The film’s steady performance in key markets like Germany, Australia, and France indicates strong audience interest and a promising future for the series.
Paramount’s IF also saw success overseas, bringing in another $11 million across 69 markets. The John Krasinski film has reached a total box office revenue of $138 million worldwide after its third weekend. With upcoming releases in Japan and China, the film is on track to continue its successful run and attract more viewers.
Overall, the global box office landscape is diverse and dynamic, with successes and struggles across different genres and franchises. While The Garfield Movie dominates the charts with its feline charm, Furiosa and Planet of the Apes face unique challenges and opportunities in the competitive movie market. As audiences around the world continue to crave new and exciting cinematic experiences, the box office is sure to see more twists and turns in the weeks to come.
