In a shocking revelation, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo subjected at least 13 women to a “sexually hostile work environment.” The DOJ’s findings were a result of their investigation launched in August 2021, the same month Cuomo resigned amid mounting sexual harassment allegations. According to the DOJ, Cuomo repeatedly engaged in unwelcome sexual contact, ogling, sexual comments, gender-based nicknames, comments on physical appearances, and preferential treatment based on physical appearances. Furthermore, the governor’s office, under Cuomo’s leadership, failed to effectively address and stop his misconduct.

The Department of Justice concluded that Cuomo’s office was aware of his conduct but chose to protect him from further accusations rather than taking appropriate action. Shockingly, the DOJ also found that Cuomo’s senior staff retaliated against four of the women he harassed. This revelation paints a picture of an environment that encouraged and enabled sexual harassment rather than condemning and eradicating it.

Cuomo’s attorney, Rita Glavin, vehemently denied the allegations, claiming that the DOJ’s investigation was based on a flawed and biased report from the New York State Attorney General’s Office. While announcing its findings, the DOJ also disclosed an agreement to resolve their claims against Cuomo’s office for engaging in sexual harassment and retaliation, which violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The agreement memorializes the reforms initiated by the current Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, and commits to implementing further changes to prevent future instances of sexual harassment.

Governor Hochul expressed satisfaction with the DOJ’s acknowledgment of her efforts to address the culture of harassment that plagued the Executive Chamber during Cuomo’s tenure. She emphasized her commitment to creating a safe workplace for all employees and her willingness to collaborate with the DOJ to continue building upon the progress made.

Cuomo’s spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, highlighted that the agreement did not make any conclusive findings on the merits of the case. He also raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest between Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney who signed off on the agreement, and Joon Kim, the attorney who led the New York attorney general’s investigation of Cuomo. These allegations, however, should not overshadow the gravity of the DOJ’s findings or the reforms that are set to be implemented.

While Cuomo’s attorney continues to deny the allegations and criticize the DOJ’s investigation, attorney Mariann Wang, representing two of the women Cuomo allegedly harassed, welcomed the agreement. Wang expressed hope that the measures outlined in the agreement would create a lasting impact and prevent the abuse of power that has caused immense harm to numerous women.

This attorney’s perspective highlights the importance of acknowledging the experiences of the victims and the significance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
