The Amazon Labor Union Affiliates with Teamsters: A New Chapter in Worker Organizing

The Amazon Labor Union, a group of company workers who organized at a U.S. warehouse, recently announced an affiliation with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Formed in 2021, the ALU gained national attention by winning a historic union election in Staten Island, New York, at a facility known as JFK8. Initially established as an independent organization, the ALU has faced challenges in negotiating a contract with Amazon, leading to rifts between leader Chris Smalls and ALU members.

By aligning with the Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S., the ALU hopes to strengthen its position and effectively negotiate with Amazon. The Teamsters, which have been actively organizing Amazon warehouse and delivery workers, created an Amazon division in 2021 to support and fund workers in their unionization efforts. The affiliation with the Teamsters was unanimously approved by the union’s board, but still needs to be ratified by members of both organizations.

The decision to affiliate with the Teamsters has not been without challenges. The ALU Democratic Reform Caucus, a group that previously sued the ALU, has raised concerns about the affiliation process. Attorney Arthur Schwartz pointed out the lack of a membership list and questioned how the ALU will conduct a vote to ratify the affiliation. Despite these challenges, the ALU has decided to move forward with plans to hold an election for new union officers in July.

As the Amazon Labor Union embarks on this new chapter with the Teamsters, the future of worker organizing at Amazon warehouses appears to be evolving. With the support and resources of the Teamsters behind them, ALU members may have a stronger voice in negotiations with Amazon. The upcoming election for new union officers will be a significant moment for the ALU as they navigate the complexities of affiliation and seek to improve working conditions for Amazon employees.

The affiliation with the Teamsters marks a pivotal moment for the Amazon Labor Union, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that come with organizing in a corporate environment like Amazon. By aligning with a powerful union like the Teamsters, the ALU is positioning itself for greater success in advocating for the rights of workers in the ever-changing landscape of the labor movement.
