President Joe Biden expressed his hopes for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict by the following week during a press conference in New York City. He mentioned that his national security advisor has informed him that the negotiations are close, but not yet finalized.
The White House has been actively engaging in cease-fire negotiations, with Qatar mediating talks between Israel and Hamas. Additionally, discussions involving U.S., Israeli, Qatari, and Egyptian officials have taken place in Paris to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict. Amidst the escalating tensions, Israel is considering a ground offensive in Rafah, where a significant population is seeking refuge.
Stance from Israeli Officials
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that plans have been proposed for the evacuation of civilians in the affected areas. Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant emphasized the country’s commitment to the conflict, stating that if a temporary truce is established, Israel will continue its efforts until all hostages are safely returned.
The war between Israel and Hamas commenced on October 7, resulting in a substantial loss of life and numerous individuals being taken hostage. The Israeli government reported the death of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 200 people. On the Palestinian side, the Health Ministry disclosed that nearly 30,000 individuals in Gaza have perished since the conflict began. Notably, a previous truce that lasted for a week, ending on December 1, facilitated the release of over 100 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
