Lionsgate Acquires Musical Comedy ‘Power Ballad’ Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas

Lionsgate has recently acquired the John Carney directed musical comedy ‘Power Ballad’ for release in multiple countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland. This acquisition was part of a 30West package that was first announced at Cannes. The film, which was in production in Dublin, follows the story of a talented but past-his-prime wedding singer portrayed by Paul Rudd and a young rockstar played by Nick Jonas. The plot revolves around the rockstar utilizing the wedding singer’s songwriting skills to rejuvenate his own career.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, Adam Fogelson, expressed his excitement for the film stating, “It combines the best of John’s immense creative talents with a marketable concept and an incredible cast.” Director John Carney, who co-wrote the movie with Peter McDonald, shared his delight saying, “I am so delighted this film, which has been in my heart for so long, has found its home.” Carney further emphasized that musical-themed films are meant to be watched together, praising Lionsgate as the studio to bring the movie to the world as intended.

The film is being produced by Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron through their Likely Story banner, along with Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan for Treasure Entertainment, and Carney himself. It is worth noting that the same production team recently worked on Carney’s film ‘Flora and Son,’ which was acquired by Apple TV+ at Sundance 2023 for $20M. The financing for ‘Power Ballad’ came from 30WEST, Screen Ireland, and executive producers.

‘Power Ballad’ was acquired by Lionsgate with negotiations overseen by Business Affairs representative, Kaycee Holcomb. The domestic sales for the film were handled by 30WEST, WME Independent, and UTA Independent Film Group, with WME Independent managing the international rights. Paul Rudd is represented by Lighthouse Management & Media, UTA, and Jackoway Austen in this project.

Overall, the acquisition of ‘Power Ballad’ by Lionsgate has generated enthusiasm from the director, production team, and studio executives. With a talented cast and a compelling storyline, the film is expected to captivate audiences worldwide.
