In December 2023, Google revealed the existence of a new feature called Private Space for Android 15. Initially, it was thought to be a tool for securely hiding apps and files that users wanted to keep private. One of the major developments in Private Space is the ability to sign up with a dedicated Google account. This feature allows users to completely separate the space from the rest of the device, ensuring added security. Users are prompted to enter a separate Google account while creating a new Private Space, which helps prevent synced files, photos, and emails from appearing outside the space.
Users are required to add a lock pattern or PIN to the Private Space, similar to the phone lock default. This added security measure ensures that only authorized users can access the space. The lock pattern or PIN can be changed for increased security according to user preferences.
Another significant development in Private Space is the ability to install apps privately that do not appear outside of the space. Apps are downloaded using the Google account associated with the space. Users can either download apps within the Private Space through a dedicated ‘install apps’ button or by long-pressing an app outside the space and selecting the option to ‘install in private’.
Once created, Private Space is displayed as a thin strip at the bottom of the app drawer, featuring a lock icon for added security. Users can access the space by tapping the icon and entering the password. Additionally, the thin strip can be hidden through the device’s settings, ensuring that Private Space remains completely concealed unless actively searched for.
Through the settings option, users can customize Private Space by allowing sensitive notifications on the lock screen, setting automatic lock times, changing the screen lock method, and even deleting the space if needed. These customization options give users greater control over their private space and its access.
Although Private Space has not been officially rolled out by Google yet, it is believed that future Android 15 beta updates could include this feature.
