The Google I/O conference for 2024 kicked off with an exciting keynote event, where the company’s executives unveiled a host of new features that are set to revolutionize the Android smartphone experience in the coming months. Google also announced enhancements to its Gemini AI model, which will now be available on Android smartphones. Gemini will now provide information about YouTube videos, allow users to add AI-generated images to Gmail and Messages, and offer advanced functionalities such as extracting answers from PDF documents with the “Ask this PDF” option. Furthermore, Google Pixel smartphones will support Gemini Nano with Multimodality, enabling on-device AI processing of contextual information like visuals, audio, and spoken content.
In addition to improving the core Android smartphone functionalities, Google showcased how AI is being integrated into the basic smartphone app experience. The dialler app will now feature AI capabilities to detect potential scam calls in real-time, protecting user privacy by flagging suspicious activity that may involve bank information disclosure. These AI-powered features will enhance user security and privacy, offering a more secure communication experience on Android smartphones.
Google also announced improvements to the accessibility features on Android smartphones, particularly focusing on visually impaired users. With the integration of Gemini Nano’s multimodal features, Google TalkBack will provide more detailed information about images to visually impaired users, filling in information about unlabelled images. These improvements will be available on-device, ensuring that users can benefit from enhanced functionality even without internet access. While a concrete launch date for these features was not provided, Google assured users that they can expect the improved TalkBack service powered by Gemini Nano with Multimodality to arrive “later this year”.
