Golden Globe Contenders Shine at the Box Office

Searchlight Pictures’ film, Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, continues to captivate audiences as it secured a spot in the top ten films this weekend. With a gross of $2 million in its fifth week, Poor Things has accumulated a total of $14.2 million at the box office. The film has also received several nominations at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, and Best Original Score. Stone, along with Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo, have also been recognized for their outstanding performances in the film. Despite a slight decrease in the number of screens, Poor Things continues to draw in audiences and generate positive word-of-mouth.

American Fiction Finds Success

Amazon MGM Studios’ American Fiction, written by Cord Jefferson, is slowly gaining momentum with its slow platform release strategy. The film, starring Jeffrey Wright, earned over $1 million during its fourth week on 114 screens, bringing its total earnings to $2.98 million. Similar to Poor Things, American Fiction is a contender for the Golden Globe Awards, nominated in the categories of Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Male Actor for Wright. Kevin Wilson, the theatrical distribution chief at Amazon MGM, attributes the film’s success to its strong appeal to both “smarthouse” and commercial theaters. American Fiction is set to expand its release to 600 locations nationwide next week, indicating its growing popularity among audiences.

In addition to the Golden Globe contenders, other films made their mark at the box office. Thriller film Some Other Woman, directed by Joel David Moore and produced by Falling Forward Films, premiered on 225 screens and earned an impressive $87,000. The movie features a star-studded cast including Amanda Crew, Ashley Greene, and Tom Felton. Another new release, Mayhem! from IFC Films, opened in 24 theaters and garnered $6.8k. Directed by Xavier Gens and starring Nassim Lyes, this film promises audiences an enthralling experience.

Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron, distributed by GKids, continues to enchant audiences in its fifth week. With an estimated $1.72 million in earnings, the film has accumulated a total of $39.6 million at 910 locations. Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece has now secured its place as the fourth highest-grossing anime film in North America, following Pokemon: The First Movie, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, and Pokemon the Movie 2000. The Boy and the Heron is also a nominee for the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score categories at the Golden Globe Awards. Furthermore, the film’s score is being considered for an Oscar nomination, adding to its impressive achievements.

Sony Pictures Classics’ The Teacher’s Lounge continues to attract viewers, earning $13.2k in its second week on three screens. The film has accumulated a total of $54k so far. Another film from SPC, Freud’s Last Session, generated $17k on ten screens during its third week, bringing its cume to $91.5k. Memory, distributed by Ketchup Entertainment, grossed $65k on 14 screens in its third week, with a cumulative total of $161k. These specialty films showcase the diverse range of themes and storytelling that continue to enthrall audiences in the cinema.

With the Golden Globe Awards on the horizon, the box office success of these films demonstrates the power of storytelling and the ability of quality cinema to captivate audiences. Whether it be through thought-provoking narratives or engaging performances, these films have left an indelible mark on both critics and moviegoers alike. As we anticipate the upcoming awards season, it is evident that these Golden Globe contenders have made a significant impact in the world of cinema.
