Anya Taylor-Joy recently disclosed that she advocated for a particularly brutal scene in George Miller’s upcoming film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This scene, which ultimately did not make the final cut, depicted Imperator Furiosa cutting out the tongue of Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. Described as a representation of “female rage,” this moment was intended to showcase a raw and visceral confrontation between the characters.
Reflecting on her efforts to push boundaries with the character of Furiosa, Taylor-Joy expressed her disappointment that the scene did not make it into the final edit. However, she revealed that she keeps a prosthetic memento of Dementus’s tongue as a reminder of the intensity she sought to bring to the role. In her own words, Taylor-Joy emphasized the importance of the physical confrontation between Furiosa and Dementus, highlighting the character’s journey towards embracing her inner strength.
For Taylor-Joy, portraying Furiosa allowed her to explore themes of female rage and empowerment in a way she had not experienced before. She shared that the role helped her realize the importance of expressing anger for herself, rather than solely on behalf of others. This shift in perspective, she explains, was a significant moment of personal growth and empowerment for her as an actress.
As the release of Furiosa approaches, anticipation is building for the film’s exploration of the iconic character’s origins. Set to premiere on May 24th, the film is projected to have a strong global start, with an estimated $80M-$85M opening. The movie has already garnered praise, receiving a standing ovation of over 7 minutes at the Cannes Film Festival.
In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, viewers will witness the transformation of a young Furiosa from a captive of the Biker Horde led by Dementus to a warrior forging her path in the Wasteland. Through alliances and betrayals, Furiosa navigates a dangerous world to take control of a valuable resource, petroleum, alongside a mysterious companion. The film promises to delve into themes of loyalty, strength, and resilience against a post-apocalyptic backdrop.
