Dani Alves Fails to Secure Bail, Faces Weekend in Prison

Dani Alves, the former Brazil footballer, is facing a weekend in prison after failing to come up with the €1 million bail payment required for his conditional release as he awaits the result of an appeal to his rape conviction. Sources have confirmed that despite being granted bail on Wednesday after his 4½-year sentence, Alves was unable to deliver the funds for a third successive day on Friday. His legal team had requested an extension, but ultimately, they were unable to come up with the money required for his release.

Alves has been exploring various avenues to raise the €1 million needed for his bail. This includes freeing up some of his assets and requesting money owed to him by the Spanish Tax Agency. Sources mentioned that Alves hopes to have the money ready by Monday or Tuesday, indicating that he is still working on securing the funds necessary for his release. However, there was a statement confirming that neither Neymar nor his father would assist with the bail money, despite previous financial assistance given to Alves.

For Alves to be released from prison, he must meet specific conditions set by the court. These conditions include surrendering his Brazilian and Spanish passports, posting bail, and remaining in the country without the ability to travel. Furthermore, he is prohibited from coming within 1,000 meters of the victim or attempting to communicate with her. Alves is also required to make weekly check-ins at the courthouse, ensuring that he complies with the court’s orders during his release.

Backlash and Appeal Process

The decision to grant Alves bail pending the result of his appeal earlier this week was met with backlash from the victim’s lawyer, Ester García, who called it a “scandalous” decision. She emphasized the injustice in the decision, stating that it favored the wealthy. All parties involved, including the defense, the victim’s legal team, and the prosecution, were given three days to appeal the ruling. García confirmed that she would be appealing the decision, highlighting the ongoing legal battle surrounding Alves’ case.

In light of Alves’ conviction and the recent sentencing of Robinho for rape, Brazil full-back Danilo emphasized the importance of athletes setting a positive example. Danilo, who will captain the national side in an upcoming friendly match, spoke about the responsibility that top-level athletes have in influencing others positively. He stressed the need for athletes to understand their role in society and to serve as role models, not only on the field but also in their behavior off the field. Danilo underlined the significance of having conversations with young people to promote empathy and understanding towards others, particularly women.
