Goldman Sachs’ David Kostin is optimistic about this year’s earnings despite concerns about margin pressures due to higher inflation. He notes that a significant percentage of companies have already reported their earnings for the season, with the majority exceeding expectations on the bottom line. Kostin believes that companies are managing to maintain their margins and expects inflation to decrease, along with interest rates, which will contribute to earnings growth.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has expressed concerns about the American economy possibly entering a period of “stagflation.” Stagflation is characterized by high inflation, high unemployment, and slow economic growth. Despite these concerns, Dimon acknowledges that the American economy is still strong. He also points out that the current geopolitical situation is the most complex and dangerous since World War II.
On the other hand, U.S. crude oil prices have seen a decline, hitting a session low of $80.89 a barrel. This drop marks the lowest level since late March. The West Texas Intermediate futures contract for June has also fallen below the 50-day moving average, indicating a bearish trend. Although WTI is currently trading at $81.51 a barrel and the June Brent futures contract at $86.64 a barrel, traders have pushed prices down due to diminishing fears of conflict between Iran and Israel. Additionally, concerns about oil sanctions on Iran have eased as well.
