The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across large parts of the UK this weekend, with potential flooding and disruption expected. The warning is in place from 9pm Saturday evening until 6pm Sunday, covering almost the entire lower part of England and Wales. Areas as far north as Sheffield and stretching from Immingham in Lincolnshire to Tenby in Pembrokeshire are included in the warning.
A new band of “heavy and thundery rain” is forecasted to arrive on the south coast on Saturday and move northwards overnight. Some areas could see up to 100mm of rain, increasing the risk of power cuts, flooding, and difficult driving conditions. Earlier heavy rain already affected southern England and Wales on Thursday and Friday, exacerbating the potential impact of the forthcoming rainfall.
Rainfall amounts are expected to vary considerably across the warning area, with some locations receiving less than 10mm of rain while others could see 40-60mm. There is also a lower chance that a few spots within the warning area may experience 80-100mm of rain by the end of Sunday, potentially falling within a short period of time. Areas in the southern half of the warning area are more likely to see higher rainfall totals.
With the southern half of the warning area having already experienced heavy rain since Thursday, the potential impacts of the upcoming rainfall may be more significant than usual for this time of year. Communities in these regions may be at a higher risk of flooding and disruption due to the additional rainfall expected over the weekend.
Despite the impending heavy rain in the southern regions, other parts of the UK can expect sunny and dry spells. However, conditions are likely to become cloudier and milder as the weekend progresses. Cooler and fresher temperatures are forecasted for the upcoming week, with an unsettled outlook expected across the country.
The yellow weather warning for heavy rain across the UK this weekend poses a significant risk of flooding and disruption, particularly in the southern regions that have already experienced heavy rainfall. It is crucial for residents in the warning area to stay informed about the weather forecast and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of inclement weather.
