According to an infectious diseases expert, a new, deadlier variant of mpox, clade 1b, is highly likely to already be present in the UK. This strain has been confirmed in Sweden and Pakistan after originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The World Health Organization has declared it a global health emergency due to its rapid spread to 13 African countries, resulting in over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths.
Professor Paul Hunter mentioned that it may take some time before the new variant is confirmed in the UK. Symptoms of the disease initially resemble those of flu or COVID before progressing to the characteristic blisters on the face and other parts of the body. The disease is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, when fluid from the lesions is exchanged.
The risk of infection is relatively low for most individuals unless they are part of specific “sexual networks” involving multiple partners. The strain in the DRC was originally observed among sex workers. While infection through skin-to-skin contact or sharing towels is possible, it is considered rare by experts. The UK Health Security Agency has stated that the current risk in the UK is low, and the existing mpox vaccine is believed to be effective against the new variant.
Despite the high mortality rate in Africa, estimated at 3-4%, experts believe it may be lower in Europe due to better supportive care. Professor Hunter emphasized the importance of providing quality care to reduce mortality rates significantly. Early detection and treatment are crucial in improving outcomes for individuals infected with the new variant.
Individuals with symptoms resembling mpox are advised to seek medical attention promptly by visiting a genito-urinary clinic or consulting their general practitioner. The existing vaccine for mpox is recommended for those at risk or living in areas where the disease has been detected. Educating the public about preventive measures and promoting safe practices can help reduce the spread of the disease and protect vulnerable populations.
The emergence of a deadlier variant of mpox presents a significant public health challenge in the UK and globally. Swift action is required to monitor and contain the spread of the disease, with a focus on early detection, treatment, and prevention strategies.
