The Launch of BSNL’s New 4G and 5G-Ready OTA and USIM Platform

BSNL, the state-owned telecommunications provider in India, recently announced the launch of a new platform aimed at improving service quality and connectivity for its users. This platform, developed in collaboration with Pyro Holdings, is designed to support both 4G and 5G networks, aligning with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Features of the Platform

The new over-the-air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform from BSNL allows users to swap their SIM cards without any regional restrictions. This not only provides the freedom for users to change their SIM cards easily but also enhances network capabilities and services nationwide. The platform is expected to result in faster network speeds, better coverage, and ease of number portability for BSNL customers.

Benefits and Impact

According to Ravi A. Robert Jerard, the Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, the new platform will be immensely useful for customers seeking SIM replacement without geographical restrictions. It will enable users to modify their SIM profiles and manage files remotely on their SIM cards. Furthermore, the platform is reported to bridge the digital divide in rural and remote regions, contributing to the self-reliance goals of the Government of India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

The deployment of 4G services by BSNL is expected to be completed by March 2025, with the potential addition of 5G services within six to eight months of the 4G rollout. Currently, BSNL has installed 15,000 network towers across various circles, with plans to expand this number to 80,000 towers by October this year. The cloud-based 4G core technology powering BSNL’s network is also capable of supporting future 5G services.

BSNL’s new OTA and USIM platform mark a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to enhance service quality, coverage, and connectivity for its users. By aligning with the government’s vision of self-reliance and digital empowerment, BSNL is poised to play a key role in bridging the digital divide and providing advanced telecommunications services to customers across India. With the rollout of 4G and the potential introduction of 5G services, BSNL is set to meet the evolving needs of its users in the digital age.
