Studiocanal Expands to New York City

Studiocanal, a Paris-based production-distribution house, is expanding its operations to New York City. This move comes with the promotion of Anne Chérel to Chief Commercial Officer, who will be overseeing the new base in the Big Apple. The company, currently working on the film Paddington in Peru, already has an office in Los Angeles and a stake in The Picture Company, based in the United States. The focus of the New York City office will be collaborating with American distribution partners.

According to the Canal+-owned company, this expansion is part of a broader strategy to combine distribution and global sales efforts for all of its film projects. Studiocanal aims to work closely with third-party distributors to maximize the reach of its movies in the American market. Some of the ongoing projects include collaborations with Sony Pictures for the third Paddington movie, Focus Features for Back to Black, A24 for We Live in Time and Huntington, and Sony Pictures Classics for Wicked Little Letters. Additionally, there are discussions underway with an American partner for the release of Paris Has Fallen.

With the promotion of Anne Chérel to Chief Commercial Officer, Studiocanal has implemented several executive-level changes. Dominique Jubin has been named Head of French Drama at Ciné+ OCS, Isabelle Pain has joined as Head of Global Acquisitions & Analytics, and Sara Reese Geffroy has been appointed as SVP of Studiocanal Stories label and TV series development. Chérel, who has been with Canal+ since 2009, will report to Anna Marsh, the Deputy CEO of Canal+ Group and CEO of Studiocanal.

In addition to her new role overseeing the New York City office, Chérel will continue to manage global distribution efforts for Studiocanal. Since 2020, she has been responsible for the international distribution of films like Autumn and the Black Jaguar, Back to Black, and Beating Hearts. Her extensive knowledge of the global market and her leadership skills have been instrumental in building a strong sales team at Studiocanal.

Overall, Studiocanal’s expansion to New York City and the appointment of Anne Chérel as Chief Commercial Officer signal the company’s commitment to a more integrated approach to distribution and sales. With a focus on collaborating with American partners and maximizing the reach of its film projects, Studiocanal is poised to make a significant impact in the competitive film industry.
