NASCAR recently unveiled a groundbreaking prototype electric race car, marking a significant shift towards sustainability within the sport. This initiative is aimed at reducing the organization’s emissions and electrifying various aspects of stock car racing. Despite the traditional nature of the sport, NASCAR is committed to reaching net-zero operating emissions by 2035, aligning with broader efforts to combat climate change.
The electric race car, known as the “ABB NASCAR EV Prototype,” was developed in partnership with ABB, an electrification and automation company. This cutting-edge vehicle, created in collaboration with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, boasts an impressive 1,000 kW of power, equivalent to 1341 horsepower at peak performance. Notably, the car features a regenerative braking system, converting kinetic energy from braking into electrical power, a common feature in hybrid and electric vehicles.
ABB officials emphasized that NASCAR’s efforts to decarbonize its operations and reduce its carbon footprint are crucial in the broader context of the energy transition occurring in the United States. This partnership serves as a platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and demonstrate a collective commitment to sustainability. While NASCAR has no immediate plans to replace combustion engines in stock car racing, the initiative paves the way for exploration into high-performance electric racing possibilities.
Beyond the development of the electric race car, NASCAR and ABB plan to identify various aspects of racing competitions, race tracks, office operations, and long-haul transportation that can be electrified. From long-haul trucking to on-site EV charging stations and golf carts at race tracks, all operational areas will be evaluated for potential electrification. Chris Shigas, head of communications at ABB in the U.S., highlighted the multiyear partnership’s potential to serve as a model for sustainability efforts in companies across the nation.
Last year, NASCAR announced its commitment to achieving net-zero operating emissions by 2035, outlining a series of initiatives to enhance sustainability. This includes the prioritization of 100% renewable electricity at owned race tracks and facilities, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, and the development of sustainable racing fuel. By embracing innovative technologies and forging partnerships with forward-thinking companies like ABB, NASCAR is poised to lead the racing industry towards a more sustainable future.
