The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) and Better Brothers LA are joining forces to celebrate Pride Month through their annual luncheon on June 1. This event focuses on honoring films and TV series that contribute to LGBTQ visibility in entertainment. This year, AAFCA will be recognizing the outstanding Paramount+/Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers for its portrayal of gay life and its inclusion of Black LGBTQ characters and storylines. The series has been praised as one of the standout shows of the past TV season and will be receiving AAFCA’s prestigious Social Impact Award. AAFCA President Gil Robertson expresses his excitement for the recognition of Fellow Travelers, emphasizing the importance of celebrating diversity and representation in the entertainment industry.
Inclusive Storytelling in Fellow Travelers
Based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Mallon, Fellow Travelers follows the lives of its two main characters, Timothy Laughlin (played by Matt Bomer) and Hawkins Fuller (played by Jonathan Bailey). The series delves into the social and political complexities of their relationship, offering a unique perspective on LGBTQ identities. In particular, the inclusion of Black LGBTQ characters, portrayed by Jelani Alladin and Noah Ricketts as Marcus Gaines and Frankie Hines, adds depth to the narrative. By showcasing the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, Fellow Travelers highlights the intersectional experiences of individuals who identify as both Black and queer. Better Brothers LA co-founder Scott Hamilton commends the series for humanizing its characters and shedding light on the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
Black Music Month Celebration
In addition to the Pride luncheon, AAFCA will be hosting its fifth annual Black Music Month celebration on June 8 at The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The event will feature a screening of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” a poignant exploration of the life and legacy of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll icon. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with the film’s director, Lisa Cortes, as well as Black Music Month founder Dyana Williams, Amazon Music executive Phylicia Fant, and multi-talented Erica Grayson. This celebration of Black music will highlight the contributions of artists who have made a lasting impact on the industry and continue to inspire audiences around the world.
By recognizing and honoring LGBTQ representation in film and music, AAFCA and Better Brothers LA are championing inclusivity and diversity within the entertainment landscape. These events serve as important platforms for amplifying marginalized voices and showcasing the richness of storytelling across different mediums. As we celebrate Pride Month and Black Music Month, it is essential to support and uplift creatives who are dedicated to sharing authentic and impactful narratives that resonate with diverse audiences.
