China has urged Japan and South Korea to reject “protectionism” and uphold free trade as leaders of the countries met in a trilateral summit in Seoul. Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the importance of not turning economic and trade issues into “political games or security matters,” as reported by Chinese state media. Li advocated for the three countries to view each other as “partners and opportunities for development,” highlighting the need for cooperation and collaboration in the region.
The recent trilateral summit between China, Japan, and South Korea marked a significant step in reinvigorating economic and security ties among the nations. The leaders agreed to “institutionalize” three-way cooperation by regularly holding the trilateral summit and ministerial meetings. Additionally, discussions were held to accelerate negotiations for a free trade agreement that aimed to be “fair, comprehensive, high-quality, and mutually beneficial.”
Amid nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, the trilateral summit addressed the importance of regional security and stability. The joint statement released by the leaders called for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and emphasized the need for positive efforts towards a political settlement on the issue. It was recognized that collaboration among Japan, South Korea, and the United States would be crucial in addressing weapons proliferation from North Korea.
Despite geopolitical tensions, the countries agreed to ensure a transparent and global level playing field for trade and investment. China’s significant market presence was acknowledged, with experts highlighting the importance of continued communication and cooperation in export control. The interconnectedness of the global economy necessitated a balanced approach to economic relations among the three nations.
As the summit concluded, efforts were made to maintain stability in the region, particularly in light of security concerns. Japan expressed “serious concerns” over issues such as the situation in the South China Sea and developments in Taiwan. Both China and Japan recognized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for the international community. Discussions centered on finding ways to keep the economic relationship between the two countries stable amidst evolving security dynamics.
The trilateral summit served as a platform for promoting free trade, enhancing economic cooperation, and addressing regional security challenges. The call for rejecting protectionism and upholding free trade reflected a shared commitment to fostering mutual understanding and collaboration. Moving forward, continued dialogue and cooperation among China, Japan, and South Korea will be crucial in fostering stability and prosperity in the region.
