The ubiquity of plastic pollution in our environment has presented a silent but menacing threat to human health. From the food we eat to the air we breathe, miniscule fragments of plastic invade our bodies without us even realizing it. Recent studies have revealed that the average person unknowingly inhales a credit card’s worth of plastic every week, with the long-term health effects of this exposure still largely unknown.

In 2022, scientists made a groundbreaking discovery when they found microplastics concealed in the deepest recesses of the human lung for the first time. This revelation has sparked urgent research efforts to unravel the mysteries of where these insidious pollutants go once they enter our bodies, how long they linger, and what toxic effects they may have.

A Closer Look Inside

Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney have embarked on a pioneering investigation to track the journey of plastic particles as they move through the respiratory system. Building on previous studies that focused mainly on the upper airway tract, this new study delves deeper into the entire respiratory system, from the nasal cavity down to the 13th generation of the bronchial tree. By modeling the flow of air and particles through various breathing rates and sizes of plastic fragments, the researchers aim to shed light on the intricate interplay between gravity and airflow in determining where microplastics accumulate.

According to the researchers’ model, normal breathing rates result in microplastics covering up to half the surface area of the nasal cavity. Slower breathing rates tend to deposit medium-sized pollutants in the upper airway, while smaller particles are distributed more evenly throughout the respiratory tract. Interestingly, larger microplastics exhibit a propensity for rapid deposition in the upper airways, whereas smaller nanoplastics are more likely to penetrate deeper into the lung.

The Menace Within

It’s not just degraded plastic products like drink bottles that pose a threat. Common cosmetic items such as toothpaste, intentionally formulated with microplastic particles, also contribute to the problem. Reports indicate that toothpaste alone emits a staggering amount of microplastic particles each year, with a significant portion making their way into the respiratory system when inhaled. Experimental evidence suggests that these tiny plastic fragments have the potential to trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, lung damage, and systemic dysfunction in the respiratory tract, highlighting the urgent need for further research into the health impacts of microplastics.

An Ongoing Concern

While research on the health effects of microplastics is largely limited to animal models and human cell studies, there have been alarming findings linking plastic pollutants to adverse health outcomes in humans. A recent study among surgery patients revealed a correlation between high levels of plastic in the body and an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. This underscores the pressing need for more comprehensive investigations into the associations between plastic exposure and cardiovascular health.

A Call to Action

As mechanical engineer Suvash Saha from UTS aptly states, plastic particle pollution through inhalation is now a pervasive threat, ranking as the second most likely pathway for human exposure. To safeguard the health of populations worldwide, toxicologists must deepen their understanding of how microplastics navigate the human body and the potential harm they pose. Only through concerted research efforts and public awareness can we hope to mitigate the invisible menace of microplastic pollution in our bodies.
