Amazon MGM Studios greenlights sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue

After the huge success of the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestseller, Red, White & Royal Blue, Amazon MGM Studios has announced the development of a sequel. The first film, released last year, became one of the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time. Stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will be returning for the sequel.

Matthew López, who made his feature debut with the first film, has come back to write the script for the sequel, this time alongside McQuiston. Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will also return to produce the film, along with Michael McGrath and López. McQuiston will be serving as an executive producer for the sequel.

Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, played by Perez, who becomes the American equivalent of a young royal after his mother’s election as President. He has a longstanding feud with his royal counterpart, Prince Henry, played by Galitzine. Their altercation captured in a photo leads to a damage control plan to stage a truce between the two rivals, resulting in a budding romance that could complicate political situations for both nations.

Details about the plot of the sequel are currently kept under wraps. The announcement of the development of the sequel was made during a Q&A session following a screening of the film at the Culver Theater. Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation is scheduled for May 14, where more details might be revealed.

Red, White & Royal Blue was the top-watched film globally for Amazon in the first three weeks of its release. It also led to a significant increase in subscribers for the streaming platform. The success of the film has paved the way for the sequel’s development and raised anticipation among fans.

Nicholas Galitzine, who stars as Prince Henry, is also featured in Prime Video’s rom-com The Idea of You, alongside Anne Hathaway. He can also be seen in Starz’s historical drama Mary & George. On the other hand, Taylor Zakhar Perez, who plays Alex Claremont-Diaz, has appeared in The Kissing Booth films and Starz’s Minx, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Galitzine is represented by Curtis Brown Group, WME, Anonymous Content, Gang, Tyre, Ramer, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Perez is represented by Paradigm, Principal Entertainment LA, and Felker Toczek Suddleson. López is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Gang, Tyre, Ramer. McQuiston is represented by KT Literary, UTA, and Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes & Labowitz. Their combined efforts have contributed to the success of the first film and will continue to do so in the sequel.

The development of a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue has generated excitement among fans and industry experts alike. With the returning cast and crew, the sequel is poised to continue the success of the first film and potentially surpass it. The impact of the first film on Amazon’s viewership and subscribers showcases the potential for the sequel to make an even greater impact. Keep an eye out for more updates on the sequel as details are revealed leading up to its release.
