YouTube has recently announced a crackdown on artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content on its platform. This decision comes after the video-streaming giant updated its content policy to prioritize transparency when it comes to AI-altered videos. Creators are now required to disclose whether a video has been manipulated or generated using AI tools.
YouTube has introduced a new tool that will prompt creators to indicate if their content has been significantly altered or synthetically generated. This information will be added to the video’s description to provide viewers with more transparency. The process to add this disclosure has been integrated into the video-uploading workflow to make it easier for creators to comply with the new policy.
Creators will now see a new section titled “Altered Content” in the video uploading workflow. They will be asked a series of questions to determine if the video contains elements that are not authentic. If any of these questions apply, creators must mark ‘Yes’, and YouTube will automatically add a label to the description of the video. This label will indicate that the content has been altered or generated using AI tools.
YouTube has made it clear that failure to disclose AI-generated content will result in penalties. Creators who do not comply with the new requirements may face content removal, suspension from the YouTube Partner Programme, and other consequences. While the platform is currently giving creators time to adapt to the new rules, they will gradually implement strict enforcement measures.
The updated content policy and focus on AI-generated content were announced in response to the increasing prevalence of deepfakes. YouTube aims to protect its viewers and creators by introducing tools for disclosure and providing an option for viewers to request the removal of AI-generated or altered content that impersonates individuals. Additionally, specific measures have been put in place to safeguard the content of music labels and artists.
YouTube’s initiative to tackle AI-generated content demonstrates its commitment to maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the content on its platform. By implementing stricter policies and enforcing disclosure requirements, YouTube aims to foster transparency and protect its users from misleading or harmful content. Creators must now adhere to these new guidelines to ensure compliance with YouTube’s content policies and maintain a positive user experience for viewers.
