Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics, a 90-minute documentary from Canada’s White Pine Pictures, sheds light on the growing threat of microplastics to human health. The film, which is an official selection of the SXSW Festival 2024 Documentary Spotlight, delves into the alarming reality of our global addiction to plastic and the devastating consequences it has on our well-being.
Plastic People aims to educate viewers on the fact that plastic, being an incredibly durable material, never truly disappears. Shockingly, only 10% of plastic is recycled, leaving the remaining 90% to degrade into harmful microplastics. These tiny particles are now infiltrating our bodies, with alarming levels of toxicity being found in our organs, blood, and even the placentas of new mothers.
Co-directed by author and science journalist Ziya Tong and Ben Addelman, Plastic People takes a unique and personal approach to its subject matter. Tong has immersed herself in the world of leading scientists, undergoing experiments in her own home to better understand the impact of microplastics on our health.
