Hosted by Tom Papa, the ceremony awarded winners in seven competitive categories while also recognizing JJ Abrams with the Filmmaker of the Year award and Joe Earl with the CAS Career Achievement Award.

Craftsmen from some of this year’s Best Sound Oscar nominees, such as Universal’s Oppenheimer and Netflix’s Maestro, were up for awards in the Live Action Motion Picture category. They were joined by contenders like Warner Bros’ Barbie, Neon’s Ferrari, and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Last year, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick took home the award in this category and later went on to win at the Oscars. This year’s Oscar nominees in the Sound category also include Disney’s The Creator, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and A24’s The Zone of Interest.

The Documentary category featured nominees from the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, showcasing the diversity of sound mixing talent. The TV categories were equally impressive, with nominees like Succession, Beef, Ted Lasso, The Crown, The Last of Us, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, The Mandalorian, and Welcome to Wrexham. These titles have been prominent during awards season, reflecting the high quality of sound mixing across different platforms.
