The 2024 Visual Effects Society Awards were recently held at the Beverly Hilton, and the winners were announced in various categories. The leading contenders for the night were Disney’s “The Creator” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” each receiving seven nominations. These two films wasted no time in dominating the awards ceremony, with “Spider-Man” taking home the first prize for Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature. Following closely behind was “The Creator,” winning the Photoreal Feature prize for its floating village scene.
One of the standout moments of the evening was when “The Creator” was announced as the first double winner, also securing the trophy for Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project. Additionally, the critically acclaimed film “Oppenheimer” took home the award for Special Effects in a Photoreal Project. Another notable winner was “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which received the prize for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project, triumphing over tough competition from “The Creator” and “Spider-Verse.”
With its success at the VES Awards, “The Creator” is also set to compete for Best Visual Effects at the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. The film will be up against strong contenders like “Godzilla Minus One,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and “Napoleon.” Interestingly, both “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Napoleon” are also nominated for top VES film awards, making the competition even more intense.
Over the past decade, the Visual Effects Society and the Academy Awards have not always seen eye-to-eye when it comes to recognizing visual effects achievements. Despite this, there have been instances where both organizations agreed on certain films, such as “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Dune.” However, there have been notable differences in opinion in previous years, with only a handful of VES winners going on to win Oscars. Films like “Blade Runner 2049,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Gravity” managed to secure both prestigious awards in the past decade.
Aside from the feature films, the VES Awards also recognized outstanding achievements in television. HBO’s “The Last of Us” received six nominations and took home awards for Outstanding Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial, Game Cinematic, or Real-Time Project, as well as Compositing and Lighting in an Episode. In addition, industry veterans like VFX producer Joyce Cox and actor William Shatner were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Award for Creative Excellence, respectively. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Jay Pharoah, who brought humor and wit to the event.
The 2024 Visual Effects Society Awards celebrated the best in visual effects across film and television. The night was filled with deserving winners, showcasing the incredible talent and innovation within the industry. As we look ahead to the upcoming Academy Awards, it will be interesting to see if the VES winners will continue their winning streak on the Oscar stage.
