Bridgit Mendler, known for her roles on Disney Channel and music career, is now venturing into a new realm – the space industry. After studying at MIT and Harvard Law School, Mendler found her passion for space law at the Federal Communications Commission’s Space Bureau. She is now the CEO of startup Northwood Space, aiming to create a data highway between Earth and space.
Rather than focusing on building rockets or satellites, Northwood Space is dedicated to mass producing ground stations, or teleports, that connect to satellites in space. With initial funding of $6 million from investors like Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz, Mendler, along with her cofounders, are determined to make data transmission to and from space more accessible.
One of Northwood’s key goals is to build satellite ground stations that can be delivered within days, instead of months. This quick turnaround time ensures that satellite operators can efficiently reconfigure their networks to support Earth-based operations without delay. The startup’s focus on flexibility and reliability is crucial in a rapidly growing space industry.
Northwood aims to address the bottleneck associated with shared ground stations, making it challenging for customers to find available teleports. By streamlining the process and offering services similar to cloud computing providers like Amazon Web Services, Northwood enables space companies to be more responsive to emerging use cases and missions.
Mendler and her team are paving the way for greater accessibility to space data by simplifying the process of connecting with satellites in low Earth orbit. By providing a cost-effective alternative to building individual ground station networks, Northwood is democratizing access to space technology and empowering more companies to leverage satellite data for their operations.
Northwood’s ambitious plans include conducting a test connecting to a spacecraft in orbit later this year. This milestone will mark a significant step forward in the startup’s mission to revolutionize how satellite data is transmitted and accessed. Mendler’s vision of bridging the gap between Earth and space is becoming a reality through Northwood’s innovative approach to ground station technology.
