The Apple Vision Pro: No Standalone Netflix App

Netflix subscribers eagerly awaiting the launch of the Apple Vision Pro headset may be disappointed to learn that the popular streaming platform will not release a dedicated app for the device. According to Bloomberg, Netflix has confirmed that customers will not be able to access their content through an app on the Vision Pro, similar to how subscribers watch Netflix on web browsers. This limitation means that users will have to stream their favorite shows and movies without the convenience of a standalone app.

Unfortunately, Netflix users on the Vision Pro will face a range of limitations. Firstly, there will be no offline download support, which means that viewers will need an internet connection to stream content. Additionally, video quality settings will be limited, potentially impacting the viewing experience. One notable absence on the Vision Pro is the lack of “Environments,” preventing users from enjoying content with immersive backgrounds.

Another drawback of the Vision Pro is the limited streaming quality available on certain web browsers, such as Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera. Fortunately, Safari (macOS 11 or later) and Microsoft Edge do support streaming at 4K resolution. However, despite the plethora of streaming services set to offer dedicated apps on the Vision Pro, Netflix remains a notable absentee. This absence is surprising considering Netflix’s status as the world’s most popular streaming platform.

While Netflix won’t be present on the Vision Pro, Apple has announced that several other streaming apps will be supported. Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Discovery+, Disney+, ESPN, Fubo, IMAX, MLB, MUBI, Max, NBA, PGA Tour, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Red Bull TV, TikTok, and Tubi are just some of the streaming services that will have dedicated apps available on the headset. Additionally, Vision Pro users will have access to an extensive library of 150 3D movies, including popular titles like “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Dune,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” The headset promises to deliver a viewing experience that includes 2D and 3D videos along with Spatial Audio.

While the absence of a standalone Netflix app at the launch of the Vision Pro is disappointing for Netflix subscribers, it remains to be seen whether Netflix will change its stance if the headset is launched in markets outside of the US. As the Vision Pro gains popularity and more users demand access to Netflix, there may be a possibility of a dedicated app being released in the future.

The Apple Vision Pro’s lack of a dedicated Netflix app is a significant drawback for subscribers looking to enjoy their favorite shows and movies on the new headset. With limitations in offline download support, video quality settings, and immersive environments, Netflix users will have to rely on streaming without the convenience of a standalone app. However, with several other popular streaming services available on the Vision Pro, users will still have a range of entertainment options to choose from. It remains to be seen whether Netflix will reconsider its decision and provide a dedicated app for the Vision Pro in the future, particularly if the headset gains traction in international markets.
