In a shocking incident that occurred in Australia, an unsuspecting woman named Gail Auricht had a terrifying surprise when she found a massive red-bellied black snake hanging from the water and ice dispenser of her refrigerator. The unwelcome intruder, estimated to be approximately 80 centimeters (31 inches) long, was spotted on January 13 in the outdoor entertainment area of Gail’s home in the Adelaide Hills. It seems that the snake sought refuge from the scorching heat and ended up trapped in the fridge. Fortunately, Gail managed to remain calm, and her resourceful neighbors promptly contacted a professional snake catcher who safely removed the reptile.
Gail’s encounter with the red-bellied black snake garnered considerable attention locally and nationally. However, this particular snake is not the only one of its species that has been making headlines in Australia recently. In another incident this week, a red-bellied black snake was found hiding beneath a restaurant’s coffee machine. Moreover, on the same day that Gail’s fridge transformed into a snake dispenser, yet another one managed to hitch a ride on a Rural Fire Service vehicle. It appears that these sneaky serpents are becoming bolder and more prevalent in unexpected locations.
Red-bellied black snakes, scientifically known as Pseudechis porphyriacus, are native to the east coast of Australia. With their glossy black backs and vibrant underbellies, these snakes are easily recognizable. Though venomous, they are not typically aggressive and rarely bite unless provoked. Their diet consists mainly of frogs, lizards, small mammals, and even other snakes. While there have been no confirmed deaths from their bites, their venom can cause unpleasant symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle weakness.
Gail recounted her terrifying experience to the ABC’s Daniel Keane. She initially mistook the hissing sound for an air compressor but was utterly shocked to discover the snake dangling from the ice outlet. It seemed that the snake had maneuvered itself into a tight spot and was struggling to free itself. Witnessing the struggle, Gail observed, “As he turned himself around – he had to slide himself up to get his whole body through – he appeared to have become stuck. I could only see the bottom half of the snake at first sighting, and it was using a lot of force because it was managing to pull the door, which was setting the [fridge] alarm off.”
Why did the snake choose the refrigerator as its hideout? Snakes lack the ability to regulate their internal body temperature, so they seek refuge in cooler locations during extreme weather conditions. Unfortunately for homeowners, snakes often find these refuge spots in backyards and homes. As the temperature rises, snakes bask in the sun to absorb warmth. Additionally, they may be attracted to the heat emanating from a car engine, as discovered by one unsuspecting driver in 2018. When the weather becomes exceptionally hot, snakes venture into cooler places like behind an air conditioner, under a refrigerator, in a toilet bowl, under a barbecue, or even in a crevice in a retaining wall. With Australia’s climate having warmed by approximately 1.4°C since 1910, snakes are increasingly seeking shelter in unexpected environments.
Simon Hempel, the experienced snake catcher responsible for safely extracting the reptile from Gail’s fridge, commented on the unusual nature of the incident. Despite his 25 years of rescuing snakes, this was his first encounter with a snake in a refrigerator dispenser. He attributed the recent influx of snake encounters to the combination of hot weather following heavy rainfall, which disrupts the snakes’ usual habitats and behaviors. Hempel believes that such an incident is highly unlikely to occur again in the future. He successfully retrieved the snake without causing any harm to the reptile or the residents. Certified snake catchers are crucial in safely relocating these reptiles to ensure the safety of both humans and snakes alike. To minimize the risk of snake encounters, experts recommend keeping doors and windows closed, securely storing food and rubbish, and seeking professional help if ever faced with a snake in your living space.
The intrusion of a red-bellied black snake into a refrigerator serves as a startling reminder of the diverse and unpredictable wildlife that coexists with humans in Australia. As these encounters become more frequent, it is essential for individuals to stay vigilant, take preventive measures, and seek professional assistance when necessary. By understanding the behavior and habitat of these creatures, we can coexist in harmony and ensure our safety while appreciating the beauty and biodiversity of our environment.
